The Irvine Unified School District’s (IUSD) priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. With the growing popularity of e-vehicles (e-bikes, e-scooters and e-skateboards among students, IUSD has implemented measures to help support the safe and responsible use of these devices.

We encourage families to please contact your middle or high school administration office for additional information.

Mandatory e-Vehicle Safety & Registration Program

In partnership with the Irvine Police Department (IPD), IUSD’s e-Vehicle Safety & Registration Program educates students on responsible riding, California e-vehicle laws, and safety.

  • Attendance: All middle and high school students who ride e-vehicles to school must attend an IPD-led safety presentation each fall. Middle school parents/guardians are required to attend. Parent support is key to student safety.
  • Registration & Permits: After attending, students and parents must submit a registration form. Approved students receive a permit to park on campus—e-vehicles without a permit are not allowed.

Safety Tips for e-Vehicles:

  • Follow the Rules of the Road: E-vehicle riders must follow traffic laws just like cars and bicycles. This includes stopping at red lights and stop signs, yielding to pedestrians and riding in the correct direction.
  • Helmet Safety: Helmets are mandatory for all riders under 18 and for everyone on a Type 3 e-bike. Wearing a helmet can greatly reduce the risk of serious injury.
  • Be Visible and Prepared for Night Rides: Wear reflective clothing and ensure your e-vehicle has a front white light and rear red reflector. Avoid night rides on poorly lit paths.
  • No Distracted Riding: Avoid using mobile devices or headphones while operating e-vehicles. Staying alert is essential for your safety and others on the road.
  • Courtesy to Others: Be mindful of pedestrians and slower traffic, use a bell or audible signal when passing and reduce your speed in crowded areas.
  • Safe Speeds: Know your e-bike’s limitations and practice riding at lower speeds. Familiarize yourself with the brakes and adjust your speed accordingly.

Did You Know?

  • E-Bike Regulations: In California, e-bikes are classified into three types based on speed, and each has its own regulations, particularly Type 3, which can go up to 28 mph and is only for riders 16 and older.
  • Modifications: Modifying an e-bike to increase its speed is dangerous and may reduce the effectiveness of the brakes and safety features.
  • Pedestrian Safety: E-vehicle riders should always yield to pedestrians, especially on shared paths or sidewalks.

To maintain awareness and reinforce safe practices, IUSD shares consistent e-vehicle safety reminders and tips with students and families. This includes updates on e-vehicle laws, best practices for safety and reminders about the expectations outlined in our registration program. These communications ensure that students, parents and staff remain engaged in promoting safe, responsible behavior on e-vehicles.
