During the December 12 Irvine Unified School District Board Meeting, the Board selected a new president and clerk, which are one-year terms. The Board unanimously selected Sharon Wallin to serve as president and Lauren Brooks to serve as clerk.
The Board and Superintendent Walker thanked Ira Glasky for his service as Board President since last December. “Throughout this past year, Ira has served with grace and honor,” said Wallin. “Thank you does not begin to express our gratitude.”
In addition to being the final session of 2017, Tuesday marked the annual organizational meeting for the five-member board, which approved school site liaison assignments, determined Board Member committee participation, appointed representatives to various District committees and established meeting dates through December 2018. The next two regular meetings are scheduled for January 23 and February 13.
Certification of First Interim Report
The Board also certified the first interim report of 2017-18 as “positive,” meaning the District is expected to meet its financial obligations over the next two years. Every school district in California is required to examine and certify its financial condition as “positive,” “qualified” or “negative” twice during each fiscal year. Positive is the ideal certification, while qualified indicates a district may not be able to meet its financial obligations for the current year and the two subsequent years. A negative certification indicates that a district will not be able to meet its financial obligations over this period.
Boundary Adjustments
After several months of reviewing enrollment data, listening to feedback from the community and receiving input from the Boundary Advisory Committee, the Board heard a final staff presentation and public comments before approving boundary adjustment Option 1. This adjustment will keep the Stonegate Elementary School community cohort together and beginning in 2019, change the attendance areas from Portola High School to Northwood High School and from Jeffrey Trail Middle School to Sierra Vista Middle School. The Board also voted to adjust boundaries for students from the Los Olivos community from Portola High School to University High School, beginning in August 2019.
