Noah Villanueva, a senior at Northwood High School, has been named the prestigious title of Orange County Register’s 2025 Artist of the Year for film and television.

Villanueva earned this honor with his nearly nine-minute suspense film, Faces, which he wrote and directed. The project reflects Villanueva’s commitment to authenticity and explores the theme of self-truth through the story of a character who travels back in time to correct a fatal mistake and ease her overwhelming guilt.

Villanueva was selected after an intensive interview process conducted by a panel of distinguished artistic professionals and college faculty members from across Southern California. The selection process included a student presentation and follow-up conversations with the panelists. Out of six talented finalists in the film and TV category, Villanueva emerged as the top choice.

Looking ahead, Villanueva plans to continue his creative journey by studying film in college.

“Congratulations to Noah on this incredible achievement. This is one of the most competitive and prestigious recognitions for young artists in Orange County, and Noah’s selection speaks volumes about his incredible talent, dedication and creative vision,” stated IUSD Director of Arts IUSD Erin Zoumaras. “His success reflects the exceptional quality of students and teachers in IUSD’s arts programs.”

Villanueva’s recognition comes amid a strong showing from other Irvine students as well. Other students recognized as finalists in different categories include Amicus Carrasco of Portola High School, honored in the instrumental music category, and Sophia Tang Nagel of University High School, recognized in the fine arts category. Both students were one of only four finalists in their respective categories.

The Orange County Register’s Artist of the Year program annually honors top high school talent across a wide range of artistic disciplines, including film, music, fine arts, dance, theater and vocal performance. Nominees, semifinalists, finalists, Artists of the Year, and their teachers and parents will be honored at the Artist of the Year award ceremony on May 7.

Join us in congratulating Noah on this achievement and the other finalists and students who participated in this competition.
