Portola High School and University High School have each been awarded Strike Up The Band grants from the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. Both high schools will use the funding to purchase new musical instruments for their music departments.
The grants, which offer up to $10,000 to qualifying Orange County schools, are aimed at expanding access to musical instruments and teaching materials, enabling more students to participate and grow in their musical education.
University High School plans to purchase a Yamaha Tenor Saxophone Lacquer with Nickel Keys and a Yamaha Student Trombone, enhancing their band’s brass and woodwind sections. Portola High School aims to use this grant to purchase musical instruments as well, such as the Fox Model 222 Bassoon With High D Standard, supporting the growth of its orchestra and ensemble programs.
These grants add to IUSD’s existing investments and commitment to the arts by providing additional opportunities and enrichment for all students. IUSD’s art program continues to thrive thanks to the strong commitment from the Board of Education and support from the community, such as the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Irvine Company, which has committed to contributing nearly $50 million over 20 years through the Excellence in Education Enrichment Fund.
“Our arts education in IUSD continues to flourish thanks to the commitment of the Board and our community partners,” stated Director of Arts IUSD, Erin Zoumaras. “We are excited to see how our arts and music programs will continue to grow now and in the future.”
