The Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) is proud to announce that Belinda Averill, Principal of South Lake Middle School, has been named one of only nine recipients nationwide of the 2024 Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership. Averill is just one of only two educators in California to receive this prestigious recognition, which honors principals who have made a significant impact on their schools and communities.
The award, announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona, recognizes principals who exemplify leadership excellence, innovation, and a deep commitment to student achievement and well-being. Recipients are selected from the National Blue Ribbon Schools program, and Averill’s leadership at South Lake Middle School has been pivotal in its recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School.
“Schools that raise the bar count on school leaders who raise the bar,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “As recipients of the Terrel H. Bell Award, you have driven change, shaped school cultures, and fought for excellence in education.”
This year marks Averill’s 30th year in education. She began her career as a Special Education Teacher in Los Angeles. She went on to teach at Woodbridge High School for four years before becoming an assistant principal there. For the past 10 years, Averill has led South Lake Middle School as its principal. “I am honored to work with so many talented, professional, and caring teachers and staff, engaged students, and supportive families,” said Averill. “South Lake is a truly special community. We work together every day to help our amazing kids thrive and empower them to reach their full potential, which is reflected in our designation as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School.”
Averill will be honored at the National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, where her dedication to fostering a culture of excellence at South Lake Middle School will be celebrated.
“IUSD is incredibly proud of Principal Averill and this well-deserved recognition,” said IUSD Superintendent Terry Walker. “Her leadership has enriched the educational experiences of students at South Lake and strengthened the entire school community. This recognition highlights her tireless efforts.”
The Terrel H. Bell Award is named for the second U.S. Secretary of Education and honors leaders who, through their commitment and leadership, advance excellence and equity in schools.
