Today, Superintendent Terry Walker was the featured speaker at the Greater Irvine Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee. As part of IUSD’s commitment to regularly engage with government, business and community leaders, Superintendent Walker meets annually with this committee to provide an update on the state of education in IUSD.
The Superintendent’s presentation included information about IUSD’s status as one of the lowest funded school districts in the state and nation and how the District is leveraging our talented and dedicated teachers and staff, along with technology and facilities upgrades to enhance teaching and learning for our 36,000 students. He also informed the group about IUSD’s investments in mental health and wellness, including the Speak Up We Care initiative, building capacity in staff, and our Student Shadowing program that allows educators to walk in the shoes of students to better understand their experiences.
IUSD Board Member Ira Glasky was also on hand and discussed the District’s Career Technical Education (CTE) offerings that help middle and high school students explore career pathways in a variety of sectors. He noted that CTE courses provide hands-on learning experiences in a variety of high demand industries including medical, engineering, and culinary to name a few. While gaining industry specific skills, students also build professional skills that are transferable to successful careers in any industry and will support them in their college and post-secondary goals.
