IUSD values the learning journey of every student and is committed to providing dynamic and supportive learning opportunities to encourage student success for now and in the future. As students begin considering their elective choices for the upcoming school year, one option to consider is Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID).
AVID is a college prep and career and life readiness elective course designed for students in grades 6-12 to develop the skills and mindset necessary for success in postsecondary education and beyond. AVID empowers students by equipping them with essential strategies for academic, career and life success, such as collaboration, critical thinking, effective communication, organization and time management. AVID's college and career readiness program promotes a college-going culture, preparing students for higher education and challenging coursework like Honors, AP and Dual Enrollment. In the AVID elective, students participate in activities that support their academic growth and future goals, including:
- Strengthening skills and behaviors essential for academic success
- Engaging in collaborative tutorials to deepen their understanding of complex concepts
- Building supportive peer networks that encourage achievement
- Cultivating leadership skills and student agency
- Developing a growth mindset by setting and working toward academic and personal goals
