E-Vehicle Safety Reminders for the Holiday Season

Bikes in a winter background

If you or your family members plan on giving e-vehicles (e-bikes, e-skateboards and e-scooters) to students this holiday season or if your students already have an e-vehicle, please take a moment to review the following safety reminders from the Irvine Police Department and click here to watch an e-bike safety video from the Irvine Police Department.

Students who ride e-vehicles to school must follow their school’s registration process. For more information, please contact your middle or high school administration office.

We’re in this together! Let’s all do our part to keep each other safe.

Safety Tips for E-Vehicles

1. Follow the Rules of the Road

E-vehicle riders must obey traffic laws just like cars and bicycles. This includes:

  • Stopping at red lights and stop signs.
  • Yielding to pedestrians.
  • Riding in the correct direction of traffic.

2. Wear a Helmet

California Vehicle Code (CVC) 21212 requires helmets for riders under 18 and anyone on a Type 3 e-bike. Wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of serious injuries.

3. Stay Visible, Especially at Night

  • Use a front white light and a rear red reflector.
  • Wear reflective clothing.
  • Avoid poorly lit paths for night rides.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.

4. Avoid Distractions

  • Refrain from using mobile devices or headphones while riding.
  • Stay alert to your surroundings to ensure your safety and that of others.

5. Be Courteous to Others

  • Yield to pedestrians and slower traffic.
  • Use a bell or audible signal when passing.
  • Slow down in crowded areas.

6. Ride at Safe Speeds

  • Practice at lower speeds to get comfortable with your e-vehicle’s controls.
  • Know your e-bike’s braking capabilities and adjust your speed accordingly.

Did You Know?

  • E-Bike Classifications: California classifies e-bikes into three types based on speed. Type 3 e-bikes, which can reach up to 28 mph, are only for riders 16 and older.
  • Modifications: Altering an e-bike to increase speed is dangerous and can compromise the brakes and safety features.
  • Pedestrian Safety: Always yield to pedestrians, particularly on shared paths or sidewalks.
