IUSD Students Travel to Sacramento to Discuss Education with State Leaders

Yesterday on Tuesday, March 10, IUSD students from Creekside, Irvine, Portola, University and Woodbridge high schools traveled to Sacramento to discuss issues impacting education with state legislators and other influential policy makers. IUSD Board Members Lauren Brooks and Sharon Wallin, a handful of teachers, and PTA representatives accompanied the students.

The day began with a brief meeting in the Capitol Building, followed by a Q&A time with Senator John Moorlack. Next, the students had the option to attend either a judiciary or budget subcommittee hearing. After, they met with the Education Unit of the Office of the Legislative Analyst and later California’s Deputy Superintendent for Public Instruction, Equity and Access Division, Khi Jackson. Jackson discussed his experiences and insights into education policy and politics with IUSD students. Students made the lunch hour a working lunch by attending an informational meeting hosted by the California School Employees Association. The group rounded out the afternoon, with a quick visit to the floor of the State Assembly escorted by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris. Then Erika Hoffman form CSBA talked with the student about federal issues the country is currently facing. Finally, the students enjoyed mini tours of the Capitol led by guides.

Developing the Next Generation of Leaders

Students met weekly for one month to prepare for the trip to Sacramento. During this time, they met with IUSD Board Members, Superintendent Walker, District leadership, PTA leaders and others to learn more about education issues and priorities, IUSD’s budget, the LCFF and LCAP, legislative priorities and gain a better understanding of local and state governing.
