
This week, from March 3-7, we are celebrating National School Breakfast Week, a time to highlight the importance of starting the day with a nutritious meal and to recognize the dedication of IUSD’s Nutrition Services team, who work hard every day to provide students with healthy and balanced meal options.
Fueling Success
Studies have consistently shown that eating breakfast has numerous benefits for children and adolescents. Students who eat breakfast tend to:
- Perform better academically: Improved concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills.
- Have better attendance: Reduced instances of fatigue and illness.
- Exhibit improved behavior: Enhanced mood and fewer disciplinary issues.
- Maintain a healthy weight: Reduces the likelihood of overeating later in the day.
Our school cafeterias offer a variety of breakfast options, ranging from whole-grain cereals and muffins to yogurt parfaits, fresh fruits and protein-rich choices. The Nutrition Service team works diligently to create menus that are not only flavorful but also meet strict nutritional guidelines.
Our Nutrition Services Team: Behind the Scenes

Every morning, IUSD’s dedicated Nutrition Services staff arrives early to prepare and serve delicious, nutritious, and balanced meals to thousands of students. From fresh fruit and whole grains to protein-rich options, our team works to ensure that no student goes hungry through the day. They aid in student success by ensuring that every meal meets strict nutritional guidelines to support the whole student.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Our district is committed to promoting student success, which includes providing access to meals for all students. As part of California’s Universal Meals program, students may receive one free breakfast meal and one free lunch meal per day. While meals are free for all students in the state of California, families may still qualify for the Federal Free or Reduced-Price Meal Program for additional benefits, based on income. Families are invited to apply by following these application steps.
