As part of our commitment to special education, the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) is celebrating National Special Education Day! This day, December 2, marks the passage of the Federal law in 1972 and underlines the commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment. We are proud to recognize the collaborative efforts of teachers, students, families and administrators in supporting Special Education.
IUSD’s Special Education Department plays a pivotal role in implementing programs, partnerships and initiatives that meet the diverse needs of students who may need specialized academic instruction and intervention. Partnerships and key focuses include:
- Special Education Community Advisory Committee (CAC): The CAC, a collaborative partnership of parents of children with special needs, parents of general education students, educators, and community agencies, works collectively to support activities on behalf of students with special needs.
- Department Goal: Through an explicit focus on inclusive school communities, our Special Education Department will continue to work in partnership with our IUSD colleagues and families to ensure high-quality and rigorous instruction as well as individualized support for each student to meet their personal best in their least restrictive environment.
"Every child in the district is unique and deserves an education that fosters their individual strengths and abilities. The Special Education Department collaborates with other departments and school site staff to cultivate an inclusive environment where all students can feel welcome, supported and empowered to succeed,” stated Executive Director of Special Education/SELPA Jennifer O’Malley. “We are dedicated to providing the necessary resources and services, to ensure that all children have access to an inclusive, high-quality education in the least restrictive environment."
These programs and partnerships are just a glimpse of IUSD’s commitment to providing specialized education that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting.
